PokerStars Network
The PokerStars network services the PokerStars client only, but even without any skins it is easily the largest poker network online today. The company was created in Costa Rica in 2001, making it a younger firm than some of the other online heavyweights. After a number of years the business moved its operations to the Isle of Man in the British Isles. They are now licensed and regulated by the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission.
In 2005, PokerStars won the eGaming Review Best Poker Operator of the Year award. The award praised the innovative and secure platform that the PokerStars team had crafted. This solid foundation created the perfect springboard for the company to take advantage of the massive industry shift that occurred in late 2006. The passing of the UIGEA forced many sites to withdraw their services to US customers. PokerStars defied that ruling and remained open to US players, a move which catapulted them to the top of the rankings. They quickly leapfrogged former giant PartyPoker and have spent the last few years consolidating that position.
PokerStars is the largest online poker network, by a long shot! In September of 2009, PokerStars has been averaging over 250,000 players connected during their peak times. The second largest network, Full Tilt, just barely breaks 100,000.
The strength of the PokerStars network is built entirely upon the success of the PokerStars client. This software platform provides top quality in every department, from multi-table tournaments to personalized avatars. They provide a wider range of games than any other network, including rarities like 2-7 Single Draw and Badugi. Mac users can also get a fully downloadable PokerStars client. PokerStars is still the only site on their network - there are no skins.
Many players are attracted to PokerStars by the large number of recognizable pros that comprise Team PokerStars Pro. The squad has a habit of picking up WSOP Main Event champions, many of whom qualified for the tournament via PokerStars’ online satellites. Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, and Peter Eastgate all make their online home at PokerStars. Among the other well known faces you’ll find playing on the network are Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein and Vanessa Rousso.
